TV Pilot Script review | 'Fleabag' by Phoebe Waller Bridge
' Fleabag' is a British Comedy/Drama series written and created by Phoebe Waller- Bridge, the narrative follow the protagonist who we know only as Fleabag, as she navigates life newly single and grief stricken.
The script jumps from present to past with the use of flashbacks that gives context to the audience surrounding the grief Fleabag is experiencing from losing her friend and business venture partner, Boo. Phoebe as writer also breaks the fourth wall by using language directed at the audience to narrate the scene, for example in the below section which is the opening of the script, 'Fleabag' is directed to look at the camera. This technique is an unconventional yet effective method of conveying the central narrative of the show.
From scenes within the pilot of the show it is implied that the protagonists aim is to to heal from her grief and breakup, as she is seen actively trying to navigate life since losing Boo and breaking up with Harry; by attending a meeting obtain a loan to keep her cafe going, by attempting to maintain a relationship with her sister, but the problem she faces is that, despite her efforts, she still has a lot of personal development needed before she can reach this point. Her main character flaw being that she seems to refuse the help offered to her, this is clear within the scene where Claire goes to hug her and she flinches/pulls away.
From reading this script it has influenced the development of my script, as I wanted to include flashbacks to give context to my story, as it is based in a dystopian world, I needed to convey to the audience/reader how the world reached this point, so going into my next draft I would like to use this writing style.
